Sami Frasheri (1850-1904) was an Albanian writer, philosopher, and activist. He was born in the city of Frasher, in modern day Albania, and was part of a prominent Albanian literary family. He spent much of his life advocating for Albanian national and linguistic rights, and played a central role in the Albanian National Awakening, a movement aimed at preserving Albanian culture and identity under Ottoman rule.
Frasheri was a prolific writer, producing works in Albanian, Ottoman Turkish, and Persian. He wrote poetry, essays, and historical works, and played an important role in the development of modern Albanian literature. Some of his most important works include "Albania: What it was, What it is, and What it will Be" and "The History of Albanian Literature."
Frasheri was also involved in politics and was a member of the Ottoman parliament. He worked tirelessly to promote Albanian interests within the Ottoman Empire, and played a key role in the establishment of the Society for the Publication of Albanian Writings, which was dedicated to the publication of Albanian literature.
Frasheri's legacy continues to be celebrated in Albania and among the Albanian diaspora. The Sami Frasheri Foundation was established in his honor, and works to promote education, culture, and civic engagement in Albania today.
